This area lies within the XI Mountain Community of Castelli Romani and Monti Prenestini and the IX Community of Monti Sabini, Tiburtini, Cornicolani and Prenestini.

It is distinguished by the presence of two homogeneous territorial sub-systems: Castelli Romani and Monti Prenestini. The zone is characterised on the one side by sediments of marine origin of the limestone base of Monti Prenestini, and on the other by products of the activity of Vulcano Laziale in the Castelli Romani area.

The area is essentially rural with the presence of large towns but also extensive natural and farming areas. In particular, it includes the protected area of the Regional Park of Castelli Romani and 4 Sites of Community Interest:

  • Forest of Cerquone (Rocca Priora and Rocca Di Papa);
  • Monte Guadagnolo (Capranica Prenestina and Castel San Pietro Romano), a place with the richest flora and fauna of the Prenestini massif;
  • Maschio dell’Artemisio (Rocca Priora and Rocca di Papa);
  • Valley of Cannuccette (Castel San Pietro Romano and Rocca di Cave).
