Forget postcards, magnets, trinkets or ornaments: the best souvenir from a holiday in the Castelli Romani area is a bottle of wine, preferably Cannellino di Frascati. As Italian poet Gioacchino Belli sang ‘È bono, dorce, tonnarello, solo e cor pane in zuppa, e si è sincero, te se confà a lo stomico e ar cervello’ [It’s good, sweet and full, enjoyed alone or with bread for dunking, and if it’s a quality wine, it’s good for your stomach and your brain]. This wine, mostly made with Malvasia Bianca di Candia, Malvasia Puntinata and Trebbiano grapes harvested late, has an intense straw-yellow colour and typical fruity and naturally sweet flavour.
The production area is limited to the municipalities of Frascati, Grottaferrata, Monte Porzio Catone, Rome and Monte Compatri.
The cellars that would be more than happy to provide you with this souvenir are Cantina De Sanctis, Azienda Agricola Casale Mattia and Azienda Agricola Antiche Terre Tuscolane di Frascati.
