The cultivation of strawberries in the Martello Valley began during the early 1960s. Today, the Valley is the most important high mountain strawberry production region in Europe. Thanks to the dry and mild climate and to the altitude between 900 and 1,800 metres, the strawberries grow and mature very slowly and always under the sun, acquiring a particularly intense aroma. The cultivation is organised on terraces of land and the harvesting also takes place in sections based on altitude. The process begins in June at an altitude of approximately 900 metres, while the higher terraces are harvested towards the end of August, and sometimes even in September, when on the peaks above, the first snowflakes begin to fall.
